Scanned PDFs

Scans can work. Image quality still gets a vote.

Paid Gemini can read many scanned PDF pages and recover their tables. A readable scan is not the same as guaranteed extraction, so the preview matters even more.

Scanned PDF, not raw photo upload

The service accepts one PDF. It does not accept JPEG, PNG, HEIC, camera, or batch image uploads. If you have permission to do so, create a PDF first and confirm each page is upright and complete.

What improves the result

  • Straight, upright pages with all edges visible.
  • Even contrast without glare, shadow, blur, or compression artifacts.
  • Readable small print and clear ruling between columns.
  • Consistent orientation and scale across pages.

What makes scans harder

Skew, folds, stamps, handwriting, faint thermal paper, clipped margins, textured backgrounds, overlapping tables, and low-resolution text all reduce the evidence available to the model.

The product exposes fixed warnings, not a numeric confidence score. A cell without a warning can still be wrong.

Latency and review

Scanned pages may take longer than text-layer pages, and provider availability also affects runtime. There is no instant-completion guarantee. Compare identifiers, dates, signs, decimals, totals, and page transitions with the PDF before insertion.

Common scan questions

Does every scan work?

No. Some scans are unreadable or too ambiguous to extract safely.

Will low-confidence cells be highlighted?

No numeric model confidence is exposed. The preview can show implemented fixed warnings only.

Can I upload a photo directly?

No. Raw images are unsupported; the input must be a PDF.
